This listing includes one three cent piece dated between 1851-1873. The initial purpose of this coin was to provide an intermediate denomination between one cent and half dime making it easier to exchange foreign currency at the time. These coins are in average circulated condition, some will have small imperfections. Pictures are stock photos, dates and condition will vary.
There are three sub-types of this coin. Type 1 was issued between 1851 and 1853 and shows the obverse star with a single outline. After 1853, the weight of the coin was reduced and an extra outline was added to the obverse side of the coin in order to mark the change. In 1859, the extra outline was dropped, creating the third and final sub-type.
